Gilmore Girls is cancelled. The statement issued by The CW and Warner Bros. television reads, "This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television's most memorable, lovable characters." That's true. Seven years is enough and the show has gone off the rails from time to time this season, but it will be hard to say goodbye to our friends from Stars Hollow. The last ep airs May 15.

nOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I had a feeling it was coming, but but but ....I'm still sad.
I'll admit that I lost patuience for the show when it migrated over to CW, but I'm still bummed about this.
Yaaaay!
And I say this as a huge GG fan. I just think that this season has meandered so far off course that I don't know how it could have recovered (or at least recovered enough to justify another year).
I also think that seven years is frankly, plenty, no matter how great a show might be (and GG was truly great at its peak). Add to that that a series about a fortysomething mom and her 25-year old daughter just isn't as appealing (narratively) as one about a thirtysomething mom and her teen daughter.
So, raise a glass (or a mug of Luke's coffee, I guess) for Lorelai and Rory. Thank you for seven years (five of them great)!
I mostly agree with Chuck, Derek, Virginia Heffernan, and lots of other fans that this season has been a disappointment, though I found the dialogue and performances to be pretty mush consistent with previous seasons. Nothing lasts forever. Even The Simpsons will have to call it quits one of these days. We can look forward to ASP's new show next fall. I think at this point we will be better off with an ASP show that isn't Gilmore Girls than with more of the Rosenthal version.
Your post inspired me to riff on the usefulness of series coming to ends. But that doesn't destroy the melancholy of loss when it does end...
